A football tournament featuring teams from the power generation industry, and other customers of a Derbyshire-based engineering firm, has raised nearly £1,000 for charity.
The annual event, organised by the Greenbank Group, was held this year at the Soccer Dome in Derby with 10 teams of six battling it out in aid of the Maria Hanson Foundation.
Following the action on the pitch, which eventually ended in a final between teams from Ratcliffe and Drax power stations, a presentation dinner was held at Derbyshire County Cricket Club featuring ex-footballers Steve Daley and Roger Davies.
Ray Moorehead, Greenbank Group Sales and Marketing Director, explained: “Congratulations must go to the tournament winners from Ratcliffe power station and all the teams who took part for what proved to be one of the most competitive tournaments we’ve ever staged.
“Both during the football and at the presentation dinner there were plenty of opportunities to network and strengthen existing business relationships.
“Most importantly we managed to raise £977 for a very worthy cause by raffling off prizes donated by Greenbank and its customers.”
Based in Melbourne, Derbyshire, the Maria Hanson Foundation (also known as Me & Dee) provides special treats and holidays for people with disabilities and terminal illnesses, enabling families to make the most of the time they have together.
Arthur Lakin from Ratcliffe commented: “It was a great tournament, not because we won, but because we all raised a good deal of money for Me & Dee.”
Mike Rodger from Drax added: “We thoroughly enjoyed the tournament, it is an annual event we look forward to attending although hope to return to our position of champions next year. It’s great when fun and football can be used to raise money for charity.”
