Frankley WTW Lime Plant: Dosing Pipework

Frankley Water Treatment Works is owned and operated by Severn Trent Water. The main purpose of the site is to supply clean drinking water to Birmingham and the surrounding area, serving industrial users and 1.3 million domestic customers.

Franklyn Yates Engineering Limited was commissioned by the Tier 1 principal contractor, MWH Global, who manages projects directly for Severn Trent Water Utilities to undertake a major refurbishment on the Frankley WTW site of the Lime Dosing plant, to ensure an operational life of 20 years.

Tasks

Franklyn Yates Engineering Scope of Work:

MWH Global selected Franklyn Yates Engineering to deliver various scopes of work within the Lime Dosing main scope of work that included, design, off site fabrication and installation of 4 No. Lime Batch Overflow tanks that included steel support structures.

During the installation of the Lime Batch Overflow tanks, MWH asked Franklyn Yates to carry out extra work that included external to the main building, Lime Dosing pipework systems that run from the internal flanged connections where they exit the Lime building and run above ground on bespoke supports before entering pipework trenches where they were connected onto by others.

The confidence from the client increased and more work was issued to Franklyn Yates. This included new pipework to existing Points Of Application in a very sensitive area of site.  Following site meetings with MWH and Severn Trent Water, Franklyn Yates Engineering completed additional work.

Although Franklyn Yates Engineering work scope involvement was small compared with the overall project it was still an important and integral supply to the overall system process.

All works had to be completed to the agreed method statement, risk assessments and internal test plans. A weekly progress report was sent to the client informing them of the current status and programme adherence.

The main tasks included:-

  • Design, off site fabrication and installation of 4 No. Grade 316L stainless steel Lime Batch Overflow tanks, steel support structures and DN 500 overflow down pipes.
  • Design, off site manufacture and installation of new above ground pipework external to the main building. Lime Dosing lines (M1/1, M1/2, M9/3, M4/2, M9/1, M9/2) pipework was fabricated from 316L stainless steel tube and fittings. The pipework supports were fabricated from carbon steel and galvanised after manufacture.
  • Design, off site manufacture and installation of Lime Dosing Points Of Application at M4/1 & M4/2 areas of site. This work required the existing system to remain operational during the installation of the new stainless steel pipework systems. Temporary valves and pipework connections were installed allowing the flexibility of being able to swap from the existing system to the new system, so commissioning and proving of the new equipment could be undertaken and thereafter the new system could become live and the existing pipework could be removed.
